Ethan – update

Back in the studio trying to finish these WIP’s lying around. I picked this one of Ethan. I’ve been meaning to get back to it for a while. The session went well, and here is the result. Next i’ll fill in the background with color then I’ll need to let it dry before I do anymore.

Looking at this a day later I probably should have added in some kind of back light in the background before I let it dry.

Newest member to the family

This is a computer I picked up a while ago (2 years now).  The intention was to give this to a family friend who was in need of a computer.  Unfortunately this system is not up to par for any real use.  I found out that the video element on the system board is not all bad but not good either.  The problem creeps its ugly head when you use the internet, and or flash.  So my solution was to just cut that arm off the beast.  I literally had to remove the front of the iMac to get it to run alright for me. I am using this solely as a reference display. Now I know what your thinking.  ”Thats a bad idea” and your right it is not the best idea to use a light emitting powered LCD as any from of reference other than proportions. However “ideal” layouts and circumstances are, as we all know, hard to find in the real world.  So I’m making due, and so far so good I am enjoying the display and what it offers my studio space.  I was not however digging the look of the computer so I painted a nice monster-ish mouth onto it, and now I’m happy again.  Here is a pic

JVF

Mr Jack, is the true JVF (those being his initials). These two images are from my first and second sitting, each being about 3 hours long. I hope to put in just one more 3 hour sitting to finish this up.

At hour 10 – This version is over soft, with lots of the key likeness aspects almost lost (Eyes, and Chin being the biggest). After a good nights sleep it looks very obvious to me. However not all is lost. More updates to follow.

Tickled Pinck

Of course (to me) the title is meant to be a pun on this here individuals name, Mr. David Pinck. I thought that working with this small (5×7) canvas would be a little easier. But no, as it turns out it has been quite the pain. However this as a study has so far been very rewarding. I have definably learned a few lessons.  I see flaws but for a first sitting it not bad.

Thursday – update

Putting some more work into my Ethan portrait. Flushed in the first part of the background as well. I know think this one is ready to add the color washes.

In this picture you can also see my improved lighting situation, my pictures are no longer yellowish. I recently got some 5000k bulbs for my studio and I can not recommend them enough.

Studio setup is huge when it comes to painting, I know I’m late to the party on this but it’s better to learn late than to never learn at all ;)

Sequoia

Sequoia is the hardest work dog in the sub business.

Draw a friend day

It’s draw a friend day (yeah I made that up) so I started with my Best, Mr. Bruner. He is a nicest and most approachable person you will ever meet. :p

The Wife – first sitting

Ethan – first sitting

This is a portrait of a good family friends son Ethan. He’s a great kid and was game to pose. I do wish I could have spent more time in this sitting.

Unforgettable – update

This is of my first “REAL” sitting on this portrait.  I have been messing around with this for a while now but finally set the “pen to paper” so to speak.
